Scissor Sisters Invade Atlanta

Scissor Sisters Invade Atlanta

You’ve gotta hand it to Scissor Sisters. Just when you think they can’t get any gayer, the lead singer comes out in an assless spandex onesie.

That was one outrageous moment of many Saturday night at the Buckhead Theatre as the band kicked off its American tour in front of a ravenous, rambunctious sold out crowd.

Most of the group entered the stage as a synthesized lull calmed the eager fans, then lead singer Jake Shears bounded on stage wearing denim spandex and a red leather jacket—thank God we left ours at home because that would have been embarrassing—and the group tore into the title track of their 80s-style, glammed-out, synthed-out new album Night Work.

They didn’t let up for nearly two hours, playing almost the entire new album in-between hits from their self-titled debut album and follow-up, Ta Dah.

It was the first visit for Scissor Sisters in nearly four years, when they left the audience waiting nearly an hour-and-a-half after the opener had cleared the stage. This time around they were on in less than a half-hour. Maybe the punctuality had something to do with the announcement from co-lead singer Ana Matronic that both Shears’ and bassist Babydaddy’s parents were in attendance?

Either way, it was a cute move to follow up that message with “Take Your Mama.” Other highlights were the mega-dancey “Paul McCartney” and the uber-sexy new single “Any Which Way.”

It’s clear who the ringleaders are for the live shows: the ginger bombshell Ana Matronic and the indomitable Shears, who was so ripped he looked about a crunch or two short of doubling for Brad Pitt in “Fight Club.” But Babydaddy and guitarist Del Marquis are the pillars, stationary and stoic save for the occasional spastic head whip by Marquis.

In a lesser band’s hands, the extracurriculars of a Scissor Sisters show—the lasers, Matronic faking fellatio on a mic, Shears’ aforementioned ass peakaboo—might seem desperate. But they pull it off thanks to solid songs and the relentless pursuit of a good time.

The night ended with a reworked “Filthy/Gorgeous” as confetti (and a crowd-surfing Shears) rained down on a soaked-to-the-bone, glitter-covered audience. And with that, Shears and Scissor Sisters exited stage right as the Night Work was clearly done.
