BETTY COUVERTIER

Longtime activist Betty Couvertier brings our stories to the airwaves with her show on WRFG Radio, “Alternative Perspectives.” She’s busy with the show and her spot on the Atlanta Police Department’s GLBT Advisory Board—both natural fits for Couvertier considering her past work with the Human Rights Campaign, Georgians Against Discrimination and countless other organizations.

How would you define your role in Atlanta’s LGBT community?

A conduit of sorts…a source for information.

What do you forecast for Atlanta’s LGBT community in the next 5 to 10 years?

Unity…I see the Atlanta LGBT building relationships, having dialogue, and joining our hetero-counterparts on the job, at home, and school. I see a lot of support from our allies and I really believe that the interaction that is happening today will lead us to a better world. Our youth will be our salvation and they will lead us to a much better place.

We learn from all our experiences, both good and bad. Tell us about a negative life experience you’ve had that you learned a valuable lesson from.

Well I have learned not to put all my eggs in one basket…actively…or personally.

How has being LGBT shaped your outlook on life?

Acceptance for all. The concept of inclusion for those that might be different because to some I am different.

Tell us a little more about yourself. What are your hobbies? What are your goals?

I do not have any particular hobby. I like to know what is happening in my world so I spend lots of time, researching, and reading topics of interest to me. I hope to travel one day. I have done that through studies and books but to actually see, well that would be priceless. My goals at the age of 62 would be to leave the world a better place. I have been fortunate in life. I have lived my accomplishments, none greater than being a mom and a grandma. Being a radio show host, a producer of a talk show that allows me the opportunity to speak for myself, and to give my community that same opportunity.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what’s the one book you would want with you?

The DaVinci Code. I would not get sick of reading it.
