LOUIS GARY
Louis Gary made it through tough, intolerant times in Mississippi to become one of Atlanta’s most respected business leaders. Gary is all over the community, from hosting AEN networking luncheons to putting on fundraisers like last month’s Get It Out of the Closet fashion show.
How would you define your role in Atlanta’s LGBT community?
I am not sure that my role is any different to our community than that of my late father’s to his. I am foremost a good husband, a neighbor, and a business leader with an interest in hands-on philanthropy. I believe it is important to be “out” in all aspects of my life and profession as it frees one of the burdens of carrying the bigotry of others on your shoulders. And it offers hope to the many young people you encounter that question their purpose when seeking self acceptance and contemplating their future.
What do you forecast for Atlanta’s LGBT community in the next 5 to 10 years?
There is a whole new generation coming forth that have grown up without the limiting boundaries on knowledge and freedom of expression as a result of the web. This new generation is more color blind and just naturally seems to accept sexual orientation and gender expression. Greatness will follow.
We learn from all our experiences, both good and bad. Tell us about a negative life experience you’ve had that you learned a valuable lesson from.
My partner and I moved to Atlanta after eight years of intolerance in Mississippi, and as with most LGBT, some from our own families. While we will always treasure our fond memories of our heritage, we have experienced greater personal success in the more enlightened community of Atlanta. Trust your self-preservation instincts.
How has being LGBT shaped your outlook on life?
I believe that it has always deepened my empathy for the struggle of others whom may not have the voice to speak up for themselves. It has taught me to question the “truths” adhered to by tradition and exclusivity; two words often used to divide us, even in our own community.
Tell us a little more about yourself. What are your hobbies? What are your goals?
I enjoy my time outdoors, gardening, walking, and hiking. I enjoy my own home improvements as they give you a sense of accomplishment with your hands. I seek to grow old together with my partner Rocky as gracefully as my Italian grandparents into their 50th anniversary, still dancing together to their polkas….ours 80’s genre.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what’s the one book you would want with you?
If you have ever met me, you know I don’t need a book….I will write my own!
