Earlier today Out on Film announced the September 29 opening night will be a double feature consisting “The Sleeping Beauty of East Finchley” and “Going Down in La-La Land.”
“We are very excited about opening Out on Film with a first – a film for the ladies and then a film for the men, although anyone can enjoy either one of our opening night films,” says Jim Farmer, festival director of Out On Film. ‘The Sleeping Beauty of East Finchley is a small film, but a lovely one with a huge emotional impact. ‘Going Down in La-La Land’ is a perfect film for opening night. Casper Andreas’ films have been extremely popular at Out On Film (including ‘The Big Gay Musical’ and last year’s Audience Award winner for Best Comedy ‘Violet Tendencies’) and we all feel this is his best one. It’s based on the very popular novel by Andy Zeffer.”
They also announced the festival will close with the first Atlanta screening of the acclaimed “Judas Kiss” starring Charlie David, Richard Harmon, Timo Descamps and Sean Paul Lockhart (aks Brent Corrigan).
Some if the other films playing during the festival which runs from runs September 29 – October 6 at the Midtown Art Cinema include: “This is What Love in Action Looks Like,” “E-Cupid,” “Leave it on the Floor,” “Cho Dependent,” and “Mary Lou.” The full schedule will be available on approximately August 15. www.outonfilm.org

The who’s who of New York’s gay and gay-friendly elite enjoyed a fun night of entertainment and cocktails during the annual GLAAD Manhattan Summer Party held at 230 Fifth’s Rooftop Garden. The event was hosted by nightlife icons Brandon Voss and Tony Fornabaio.
Rokk Vodka rolled out the blue carpet for the likes of Lance Bass, Carmen Carrera, the cast of Logo’s the A-List: New York as well as Romona Singer, Kelly Bensiomon and Alex McCord (and Simon of course) from Bravo’s the Real Housewives of NYC. For those of you who missed out, Rokk also provided the complimentary libations at last week’s Fenuxe Best of Atlanta party click here for a recap!
Shontelle closed out the evening with a special performance which kept the crowd dancing the night away. By all accounts the party was a smashing event.
Rokk is no stranger to providing complimentary cocktails! Check out the link here for info on the GLAAD Media Awards LA and click here for more info on the GLAAD Media Awards NYC.

It is 4PM on Tuesday in Atlanta and we all know that means it is time for Turn it Up Tuesdays!!! Today we are going to check out a couple of our new favorite things.
Wish
You think Nicki Minaj didn’t have any competition, but oh sista she does now!
Wish hails from Baltimore, but now calls the Big Apple home. She got her start signing choir tunes when she was 7 and quickly became a local “must see”. She moved to NYC and started throwing down some serious tracks with longtime friend and songwriter Donny Roc. They dropped a promo disc in 2009 and caught on like wildfire.
In 2010 she signed with Jive records (home to the one and only Brit Brit) and is ready to hit the music scene hard. Don’t try to pigeon hole her cuz she won’t take that. She blends the best in Rap, hip-hop, R&B and even a little alternative into some pretty dope ditties.
If you are ready to dance, turn your music loud and check out her video for “Feel Ur Beat”!
Also check her out more of her stuff at www.wishishere.com! You can even download her “Mix Tape” for free!!!
Ellie Goulding
We end Turn It Up Tuesday with the British chart-topping Ellie Goulding who will make an appreance in the ATL this weekend. Even if you don’t know the name chances are you have heard her music. Her latest song called “Lights” is being played all over the radio and the remixes are lighting up dances floors across the city.
See for yourself what all the fuss is about this Saturday 9PM at the Center Stage Theatre when she performs all her hits!
Check out her beats here!

Dear Mary,
I have been single for a few months after getting out of a v-e-r-y long term relationship, but I am having a hard time meeting men. One guy asked me to tweet him, but when I tried he slapped me and walked away. Can you please give me some pointers for dating in the modern world of full of technology?
Signed,
XP needing X-Perience
Dear soon to be XXX-P,
Actually, this sounds like a really great conversation starter. First, buy yourself a laptop. For reference, I like to walk into Good Purchase or MP3 Shed and ask them to point me to a computer that will let me simultaneously G-Chat, play Angry Birds and look up Kim Kardashian’s measurements. Apparently almost any machine can do that these days (like, any machine, not just computers; phones, dishwashers, lamps, etc).
Now, take your lovely new PC purchase to anyplace featuring a “We have WiFi!” sticker on the door. Er, well, take it to a coffee shop. I do not understand the appeal of WiFi in a restaurant…I mean really…you’re there to eat. If your social life is such that you need an Internet connection to have a dining companion, you are beyond my help.
I should have mentioned earlier to look super hot, but I figured you already are. So, computer in hand. Perch your booty in a high-traffic area, maybe right by the organic wooden stirrers and raw sugars, and shake your head in annoyance. Sigh, if need be. Continue to look frustrated until you land a tech-savvy cutie. Ta da!
One thing though: your definition of tweeting is clearly far more interesting than what the word actually means, so I suggest you stick with it forever.
Never Change,
Mary Markers-McMark

Out on Film has been named as recipient of a $2,500 grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts. This money will allow the festival to grow bigger and better than ever before!
Jim Farmer, Festival Director, had this reaction: “I am absolutely thrilled. Out on Film is a very small organization. The recognition of the good work we are doing, the quality programming we schedule and the diverse crowds we reach is a huge compliment. It’s been our goal from the minute we became independent to make Out on Film the best film festival it could be, one for our entire community.”
The festival is slated to take place from September 29 thru October 6 at the Midtown Art Cinema. They have announced three films so far; “We Were Here” which chronicles the early days of the AIDS crisis in San Francisco, “Wish Me Away” a documentary about country music singer Chely Wright’s coming out and the Hebrew Musical “Mary Lou” from director Etyan Fox.
Stay tuned for more details as Out on Film will be announcing their premiere night film in mid-August. Fenuxe will keep you posted on all the festival details as the dates approach.

What happens when all the gay nightclubs, bars, restaurants, retail establishments, and tourism industries all come together? GREAT things! That’s exactly what’s taking place right here in our city.
A new organization called GREAT Atlanta has been formed with a primary objective of helping our local LGBT community thrive. “With America’s ongoing economic crisis we can not just sit back,” states Don Hunnewell, President of GREAT Atlanta, owner of Holey Glass and former gay bar owner, “Our [LGBT] business community is struggling to survive and we can’t continue to complain with more and more of our doors closing. Our business and community leaders must come together with energy and fresh ideas and that is exactly what’s happening with GREAT Atlanta.”
GREAT stands for Gay Retail, Entertainment, and Tourism and has evolved from previous organization called BOA (Bar Owners Association). BOA was instrumental in the late 90s in working with the city to make Atlanta’s nightlife scene more vibrant. The time has now come for a multi-industry coalition to join forces to not only restore Atlanta’s nightlife scene, but to attract and retain more LGBT individuals and encourage those individuals to shop within the community.
One of the key components to GREAT is education. “The great & open lifestyle that we have in Atlanta is made possible from the many open LGBT businesses.” says Philip Rafshoon, the owner of Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse and Vice President of GREAT, “It is important [that we] educate & remind our community of the role those businesses play in the community. Education is a key component of our alliance & will remain a big part of it to ensure that our community doesn’t take us for granted.”
Look for amazing changes and exciting ideas coming to our community as we continue to solidify Atlanta as one of the go-to gay destinations.
Top 5 Reasons to eat, shop, and drink from local gay-owned or gay-friendly businesses:
- Shopping local puts three times as much money back into a community versus shopping at a big chain store and that means when you shop, eat, and drink at a local LGBT establishment you are investing in our local LGBT community, in your neighbors, and in yourself.
- Shopping within the community supports those local businesses which give Atlanta it’s unique, gay culture distinguishing us from other cities.
- The more money we have in the community, the greater the voice we have in political matters.
- Shopping within the community allows LGBT businesses to create better programming, hire more employees from within the community, and host more events thus attracting more tourists and new residents.
- Non-profits also receive greater support – studies show that non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses. This means that organizations like Aid Atlanta, For the Kid, CHRIS Kids, Jerusalem House, Atlanta Pride, ALHI, Georgia Equality, PALS, Joining Hearts, and many other great organizations like these can receive more support and continue serving our community.

Dear Mary,
So, I’ve always kind of kept to myself and did my own thing. I am kind of the all-American type. I was born in Cobb County and after graduating from Kennesaw State I landed a job in downtown Atlanta. I rented an apartment in midtown and I am trying to get involved in the local scene. I guess this is my problem: I am excited to live in town, but I feel kind of isolated. Since I was born and raised in the suburbs I don’t immediately come across as gay. When people finally find out they either think I have been hiding it or they think I am trying to be someone I’m not. I like your column and the wacko advice you give people. Give me some crazy advice of how to fit in and it might just work!
Signed,
Awaiting a response on Argonne
Dear Aragorn (the LOTR guy?):
Are you telling me that people make judgments about how you live your life based on the way you dress, talk and present yourself without bothering to get to know the real you? What kind of place is it that you live in?! Just normal middle America you say? Oh yeah, that is what we do here.
So, it is your responsibility to straighten…er…clear up any areas of misconception. You can easily work into conversation the fact that you’re gay without it being awkward. For example, when a coworker asks you what you did this weekend, simply reply “the boyfriend and I did some yard work, played video games, hung out. And then we had hot gay sex.” Or, if you’re single, you might tell them “I slept in, then went for a long run and took a shower, meditating on how I am attracted solely to males and not females.” Totally normal conversation nuggets! Thank me later.
Or just make the “interested in males” portion of your Facebook public. Every new person you meet is going to go look at it anyway.
Much love, mo’ thugs, holla atcha girl,
Mary Makers-McMark

Emmy award winning CNN anchor Don Lemon acknowledges publicly that he is gay and a victim of child molestation in his new memoir Transparent. I have known Don for a few years and while doing this interview, I detected a happier and wiser man … I applaud his bravery and hope telling his story not only brings him peace, but also enlightens the many readers of his new book.
Don, why this book and why now?
I was approached to do a book about success and, after careful consideration; I thought to myself “why not do a book the makes a difference?” I wanted to write the truth about my life; I wanted to share who I was and where I came from.
You share your experiences of being a victim of child molestation. Who did this to you? How did you cope? How did you recover?
It was a friend of the family. I dealt with each incident individually; I healed in between each of the molestations. I believe grace healed me I was luckier than most that I could disconnect and let it be the past.
I have had the pleasure of meeting your lovely Southern mother. How did she and the family deal withall that was revealed?
The toughest part has been answering questions about my personal life. My mother has always been accepting but now she has had to face public questioning – and it’s tough for a parent. She is strong but I feel for her. Other members of the family don’t understand why I am “airing my dirty laundry.”
Despite all of these challenges, I want to encourage folks to live their truth. Those who have the question, “is it ok to come out” I say YES it is ok.
What have been the positives/negatives of sharing your personal story?
I have had people reach out to me and say that they found the courage to come out and live their authentic lives because I came out publicly – that’s intense feedback. On the other hand I hate that my family has to live through it, too.
The title of the book is “Transparent.” To what does that refer?
There is no question off limits. This book has been liberating and freeing. I hope my candor can help people who are looking for authenticity. As a man who grew up in the South, I understand the challenges facing a gay man, a gay African- American man. I don’t want anyone to harm themselves because of these issues – I feel that as an adult man, I have to help however I can and this is my way.
Don Lemon’s revealing book can be found at Outwrite Bookstore and Brushstrokes.
